Psalm 78:1-4, 12-16
Hear
my teaching, O my people; incline your ears to the words of my
mouth.
I
will open my mouth in a parable; I will declare the mysteries of ancient
times.
That
which we have heard and known, and what our forefathers have told us, we
will not hide from their children.
We
will recount to generations to come the praiseworthy deeds and the power
of the Lord, and the wonderful works he has done.
He
worked marvels in the sight of their forefathers, in the land of Egypt,
in the field of Zoan.
He
split open the sea and let them pass through; he made the waters stand
up like walls.
He
led them with a cloud by day, and all the night through with a glow of
fire.
He
split the hard rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as from the
great deep.
He
brought streams out of the cliff, and the waters gushed out like
rivers.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy
Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall
be,
world without end. Amen.

Yes, we will have a book study! Two in fact…both on Tuesday. We are partnering with St.
James, Kentville and the Parish of Cornwallis to
offer:
Growing Closer to God: Beginning on Oct.
4th we will meet in the Anglican rectory in Port
Williams, 6-7:30pm on four Tuesday evenings. A light supper will be
provided. Join us as we spend time with some spiritual giants from the
past few centuries, reading and discussing brief excerpts of their
writings which focus on the spiritual discipline of Study. The group size is limited
- sign up soon. Talk to Sandra for more details.
Love Wins: Beginning on Oct.
11th, we will meet on Tuesdays at 10am (location TBA) to
read and discuss this
provocative book written by Rob Bell, an intelligent and devout
evangelical who has also been labeled a heretic. Bell challenges
traditional evangelical teachings about who Jesus was and is, and what
the cross was all about. His “in-your-face” style and content has
garnered him death threats from fellow evangelicals. Come and see what
all the fuss is about! Books will be available for sale (approx. $12) or
loan.
Thank you to all who provided food or attended the student dinner held
at the rectory last Friday night. It was a great
evening!
Please sign! There is a card at the back of the church for Audrey
Hartley, who has just moved to B.C. Please join us in sending
your prayers and good wishes!
Attention “Just Us” Coffee Drinkers …. Don't throw your used coffee
bags in the garbage. Applewicks, under the guidance of Faye
Hergett, has been turning them into smart shopping bags.
Please bring your coffee bags to church any
Sunday.
Thank You Thank
you to all who contributed to and worked at the
Welcome Back Breakfast last Sunday. Over half of our "regular"
weekly congregation participated. For food and friends,
Amen!
Rector’s schedule: Sandra will be in the church office on Tuesday from 12 noon
till 2 and will be off on Monday.
Some Items of Note from Last Week’s Parish Council
Meeting
·
A New Vision for Music: Parish Council supported a recommendation from the Personnel
Committee with respect to our music program at St. John’s. Effective
Oct. 1st, John Scott will become our Director of Music. John
is the University Organist at Acadia and Director of Music with St.
James, Kentville. John will conduct our choir practices (now moving
to Wednesdays at 4:30pm) and will play the organ one Sunday a month.
On the remaining Sundays, organ students or supply organists will be
with us. This arrangement provides an opportunity for St. John’s to
provide a nurturing learning environment for students while also
ensuring that Anglican Church music continues to be taught and played.
There was a lot of excitement about this new
arrangement.
·
Parish Hall Update: The parish has received an offer to purchase St. John’s
Parish Hall, and another community group has expressed interest in
purchasing our hall. These were unsolicited expressions of interest. No
decision will be made until we meet with the congregation to review
updated information on hall maintenance and to discuss our options.
A meeting has been planned for Sunday, October
16th following the 10am service. If you have questions or concerns, please talk to Grant
Peart, Chair of the Properties Committee.
·
Memorial bench: The family of Olive Stoddard would like to place a bench
near our memorial gardens in Olive’s memory. This will be a lovely
addition to our church property and a fitting
memorial.
