Williams. Performing will be Rejouissance - a Halifax-based ensemble
specializing delightful 17th and 18th century music.
St. Mary's Concert Series presents two outstanding performances during
July:
Erica McBurney in Concert, on Wednesday July 2nd., 7:30
p.m. at Aylesford United Church, $10.00. Erica is an accomplished
young vocalist from the Middleton area, and is at present working
on two degrees at McGill University. She sings professionally with
Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal, and participates in numerous choral
groups on campus. Erica is joined on the programme by flautist Jason
Furlong and piano accompanist Evelyn Keddy.
Rejouissance ("merrymaking"!) Ensemble will play at St. Mary's Anglican
Church, Tuesday July 8th, at 7:30 p.m. Admission $15.00.
This is a very special concert - part of the Musique Royale Series - and
the ensemble will waft the audience back in time with their 17th and 18th
century musics and their period costumes. This will be a most fitting
event for St. Mary's lovely auditory-style architecture and acoustics.
190th Anniversary of St. John's Church, Parish of Horton - June 1818
to 2008:
Before 1818
The Rev. Robert Norris was elected to succeed Mr. Twining in 1806 as
Rector of Cornwallis with responsibility for Horton. ...In 1811, when requests
for aid from the Arms Fund were being made, Bishop Charles Inglis [ first
Bishop of Nova Scotia] wrote: "At Horton it is in contemplation to build
a church, the expenses of which is computed at 1000 pounds. I am
encouraged to hope that 500 pounds will be raised among the people..."
No record of the constitution of St. John's, Horton, is extant.
We know that in 1813 the Rev. Robert Norris arranged a survey of the marsh
of Horton Glebe. The earliest record of scribing the conveyance of
the church lot from Stephen brown DeWolf to the Right rev. Robert Stanser,
D.D., second Bishop of Nova Scotia.
The deed was signed by Stephen Brown DeWolf and his wife, Harriet,
in the presence of Thomas C. DeWolf and Abigail DeWolf. The price
of the land was 30 pounds sterling.
In 1818 St. John's Church, Horton, was built by Mr. Jehiel Brown and
on the recommendation of the Rev. Robert Norris, a large Bible and Book
of Common Prayer were given by the S.P.G. In the report of the S.P.G.
we read: [ Rev. Morris' thanks and he goes on to describe the congregation]
...at present is small, the majority of the inhabitants being Anabaptists,
and not so well disposed to the doctrines and disciplines of the Church
as the Methodists who reside in another district of Horton and generally
formed part of this congregation in the absence of their preacher ...
The first service at St. John's Church, Horton, was held on June 18,
1818.
(quoted from "Saint John's Church Parish of Horton Wolfville,
Nova Scotia 1818-1968" by Basil Courtney Silver)
Rise Up, O Saints of God!
From Vain Ambitions Turn; Christ Rose Triumphant
that your hearts
with nobler zeal
might burn!
Commit your hearts to seek
the paths which Christ
has trod,
and, quickened
by the Spirit's Power,
rise up, O saints of God!
