190th Anniversary of St. John's Church, Parish of Horton - June 1818
to 2008:
Before 1818 The land of the Acadians lay fertile and silent in the
summer suns and winter snows for five long years after the French departed
from the shores of the basin of Minas. The expulsion of the Acadians took
place in 1755 and not until 1760 were these lands occupied and again activated
into productivity. This time came a people with a different religion,
different customs and different language.
Through the offices of Governor Charles Lawrence of Nova Scotia it
became known in the settlements of New England that large grants of land
would be given to farmers and their families who would bring their goods,
stock and building materials to furnish and cultivate their claims.
These Planters were from English families who had done well in New England
but were anxious to have more land for the up-coming generations.
Among the acres occupied were what later became known as the townships
of Horton and Cornwallis, each containing 1000,000 acres.
In the planning of the Townships, religion and education were
first considerations, and grants were made for these institutions within
reasonable distances. The church grants were called "glebe lands"
and in the history references are made to such lands in the Parish of Horton.
(quoted from "Saint John's Church Parish of Horton Wolfville, Nova
Scotia 1818-1968" by Basil Courtney Silver)
