Grandmothers all over Canada are raising funds to help their peers in Africa who find themselves bringing grandchildren orphaned by the scourge of AIDS. Here in Wolfville we have an opportunity to assist in a direct way through Ruth Kyatha, who works at an NGO in Kenya. Ruth was a student at Acadia University for eight years in the early 1990s. She estimates there are 42 grandmothers just in her community who need help. Furthermore she believes there are about 3,000 AIDS orphans in her area. She is most excited by the prospect of an international connection between grannies (and those who'd like to be grannies).  We will be able to see how grannies in Wakefield, Quebec started this process several years ago. Then the Stephen Lewis Foundation picked up the notion. Today the Wakefield grannies contribute financially to grannies in South Africa and are able through letters to let these caregivers on the other side of the world know that they are cared for. The Great Granny Revolution is a beautiful, inspiring documentary film made by Brenda Rooney, who is a member of the Wakefield group.

Date: Friday evening, June 27
Place: Wolfville Baptist Church at 487 Main Street
Event: to show The Great Granny Revolution - Norma Geggie, the founder of the Wakefield Grannies, is expected to be there to answer questions.
The hat will be passed for grandmothers in Kenya and filmmaker Brenda Rooney.
Pot luck dessert @7.30 p.m....followed by the film. For further information call Wendy Elliott, 542-7203

190th Anniversary of St. John's Church, Parish of Horton - June 1818 to 2008:

Before 1818
[Rev. Bennett was succeeded by the Rev. William Ellis in 1775 who, in turn, was assisted by the Rev. Jacob Bailey in 1779.  Shortly following 1782,  and the King's County mission was reorganized and was now made up of Cornwall, Horton and Wilmot.]  On the 24th of August 1783, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel appointed the Rev. John Wiswall ... as the first Rector of Cornwallis with the added responsibility of the full King's County Mission, which extended as far west as Middleton, a field 40 miles long and 12 miles wide.
He wrote the Society, "There is not one regular teacher in this part of the country.  At Horton there is an Anabaptist meeting-house and an 'illiterate shoemaker' supplies the place of pastor".  In his Journal he says, "The inhabitants are wild enthusiasts of every denomination - Independents, Presbyterians, Universalists, Allanists, etc, etc., and seem to agree in only one thing, love of independence in both Church and State".  In his Journal dated August, 1784, he says, "I have a very crowded audience when I preach at Horton of persons of all denominations.  I am in hopes their prejudices against our church services will gradually wear off".

The Rev. John Wiswall was holding services in the Baptist meeting house in what is now known as Wolfville, once a month...In 1786 Mr. Wiswall's Notitia showed: Baptized, Horton, 2;...[and] There is also a record that between August, 1783 and June, 1786 he had three marriages, three baptisms and two burials at Horton.

On the 30th of May 1789, his accounts show receipts; Dyke lands at Horton 6 pounds one shilling, 3 pence; Pasture 17 shillings; 450 acres of unoccupied land, one shilling.
