190th Anniversary of St. John's Anglican Church, Parish of Horton 1818 - 2008
The first baptism in the new Church was July 8, 1823, of Hannah, daughter of John and Barbara Hopkins.  The "Quality, Trade or Profession" of Mr. Hopkins is given as a cordwainer. The first marriage recorded was of John Whidden and Lavinia Chipman, August 16, 1823.  The first burial - Christian Jane Harris, age 44, July 20, 1825.  All of these entries in the record book were made by the Rev. Joseph Wright.  As far as is known this Clergyman became the first Rector of Horton in 1823.

The Rev. John Samuel Clarke succeeded the Rev. Joseph Wright in 1830, the year that the centre of the Upper Horton area, known as Mud Creek, was renamed Wolfville through a request made by Maria and Mary Woodward of their uncle Elisha DeWolf, Jr. Postmaster, who forwarded the request to Halifax.  This request was granted.  The grandparents of these young ladies, Judge Elisha DeWolf, and his wife Margaret Ratchford DeWolf, are buried in the Horton Churchyard.
