A Note from the Wardens
We want to explain the $13,000.00 deficit that the Finance Committee
has drawn to your attention in previous bulletins. The deficit is
unusually high because of unusual circumstances. The Diocese assesses each
parish an annual sum based on the income of the parish two years previously;
thus our current assessment is based on our 2005 income. Capital
income is assessed as regular income, and then capital expenses are deducted.
In 2004 we spent a large amount on restoration, far more than we took in,
so our "taxable income" was lower than usual; therefore (two years later)
last year's assessment was lower than usual and we ran a negligible deficit
at this time of year. In 2005 we spent much less on restoration,
but took in a larger sum; as a result our assessment this year (two years
later) is $8,000.00 higher than it would have been without the Restoration
and Renewal campaign. We do have a general account deficit at the
moment of some $13,000.00, as the Finance Committee noted, rather than
a more common one of $5,000.00 at this time of year, but this does not
indicate a worsening trend for the future. Income and expenses for
restoration in 2006 were more in balance, so our assessment for 2008 will
be back in the normal range, that is some $8,000.00 less than it is this
year. We are confident that with everyone's help we will be able to balance
this year's budget by year end, and we can all be reassured that St. John's
is not falling into the abyss of ever growing deficits.

Contributions Welcome for the Gravy Boat! - WAICC/ Wolfville
Area Food Bank
Christmas Hampers
* Each church in our community has been asked to contribute one
item to go into the 120 Christmas hampers being distributed to those in
need by the Wolfville Area Food Bank. St. John's has been asked for
240 tins of gravy! To get the best possible price, we have already
purchased the gravy by the case, but to help with the cost we hope parishioners
will throw a loonie or two into the orange "gravy boat" at the back of
the church. (Many thanks to Don and Shirley Marston for this charming
visual aid.)
* As always, donations of food items such as soup, powdered milk,
juice, cans of tuna, salmon, ham, turkey, tomatoes and other vegetables
and fruits, pasta and pasta sauces, oatmeal, peanut butter, personal hygiene
products and household cleaning items are most welcome.
