4TH SUNDAY OF LENT
MARCH 14TH, 2010
MOTHERING SUNDAY
8:00 AM HOLY COMMUNION  BCP
Collect: Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Reader:  Shirley Marston Eucharistic Assistant: Rev’d Canon Cal McMillan
10:00 AM  HOLY EUCHARIST BAS
As we follow the theme The Road Less Travelled  throughout this season of Lent, we take time today to reflect on those who care and support us along the road of life. On this fourth Sunday of Lent, Mothering Sunday, we thank God for the gift of mothers and mothering shown to us and to those around us.

Prelude
Announcements, Diana Patterson
The Gathering of the Community
Processional Hymn #319 Come, Let Us Join Our Cheerful Songs
Leader: Isaiah wrote that God is like a mother to us, comforting and carrying us in her arms.
As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you – Isaiah 66:13
All: Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care, and for those who care for us as mothers.
Leader: Isaiah also wrote that God will never forget us and that he knows each one of us just as a mother knows her own children.
Can a woman forget her baby as she nurses her, or feel no compassion for the child she has borne? Even if a mother could forget, I will not forget you. – Isaiah 49:15
All: Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care, and for those who care for us as mothers.
Leader: David wrote that in God’s presence, he was quiet and at peace, trusting his God like a child safe in its mother’s arms.
Now my soul is calmed and quieted, like a child in its mother’s arms – Psalm 131:2
All: Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care, and for those who care for us as mothers.
Leader: Jesus identified with the feelings of a mother, longing to wrap his arms around us like a mother-hen gathering her chicks under her wings.
How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and protects them… -- Matthew 23:37
All: Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care, and for those who care for us as mothers.

An Act of Confession
Leader: O God, the creator of relationship and the author of covenant:
Where we have forgotten that our lives come from you; putting ourselves first, choosing prayer last,
All:  forgive us our sin; restore us to yourself.
Leader: Where we have exploited our relationship with creation; taking
without replenishing; hoarding without sharing,
All:  forgive us our sin; restore us to your world.
Leader: Where we have judged the weakness of others; giving
censure not mercy, showing harshness not love,
All:      forgive us our sin; restore us to our neighbour.
Leader: Where we have belittled our own worth in your sight, wallowing in our
guilt, not revelling in our salvation,
All:      forgive us our sin; restore us to ourselves.
Leader: Where we have championed rules not relationships; placing principles
above people, withholding compassion,
All:  forgive us our sin; restore us to yourself.
The choir will lead us in singing
Lord, have mercy… Christ, have mercy... Lord, have mercy...
Presider: God of mercy, you forgive us our past sin, you strengthen us in your gift of eternal life, you shape us for glory. God of mercy, we thank you. Amen
Let us pray. Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world, evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

Psalm 32
Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah
Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah
Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them.
You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. Selah
I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding, whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you.
Many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.
Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
