190th Anniversary of St. John's Anglican Church, Parish of Horton 1818 – 2008

In 1835 the Parish of Cornwallis became vacant and from then until 1838, when he moved from the Diocese, Rev. John Samuel Clarke was the Rector of both Horton and Cornwallis.  The year 1838 is familiar to all who know Acadia University.  It was in that year that Queen's College, later Acadia College, was established.  The first class entered in 1839 and graduated in 1843.

A bridge at Port Williams was opened in 1835.  For many years this was a toll bridge and at one time John Lingley was the toll-keeper.  According to the History of Kings County by A.W.Eaton, the first bridge at Port Williams (Terry's creek) was built as early as 1780.  There was also a crossing at the foot of Ferry Lane which ran out on the dykeland.  Formerly, transportation to Port Williams was by way of Kentville.

Rise Up, O Saints of God!
From Vain Ambitions Turn; Christ Rose Triumphant
that your hearts
with nobler zeal
might burn!
Commit your hearts to seek
the paths which Christ
has trod,
and, quickened
by the Spirit's Power,
rise up, O saints of God!
